All things of PLACY® began two years ago during Tokyo Olympics

Due to the pandemic, the Tokyo Olympics was postponed for a year. At the time, strict anti-epidemic policies were still in place throughout Asia, and quarantine is required when I returned from Taiwan in August 2021. During the one-week quarantine period, I watched the Tokyo Olympic Games while I was working in the hotel room, and witnessed an unforgettable moment. Quan Hongchan, a 14-year-old female athlete from China’s national diving team, won the gold medal for her outstanding performance in the game. She come from a rural family but was recognized by the diving team and won in the Olympics after four years of formal training only. The Hong Kong team also achieved outstanding results in this Olympics, but we are still lacking standardized “fitness and talent identification” assessment tools in our student training. To step forward, teenagers with potential must start formal training earlier. Therefore, the performance by Quan catalyzed the establishment of PLACY®. We aim to use systematic assessment to “identify talent” for Hong Kong’s sports industry and identify students who are developing slower and assist them earlier as well.

As a social enterprise, one of the serving targets of PLACY® is low-income families and ethnic minorities. They are generally in difficult financial situations or overlooked by society. PLACY® would like to provide subsidies and scholarships, and opportunities for them to participate in standardized ”fitness and talent identification” assessments, which can further expand Hong Kong’s athlete pool.
